Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest certain decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
