Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any major prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
